Red Oak Middle School and PBIS
What is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a 3-tiered system approach for establishing a safe and supportive learning environment to promote social, behavioral, and academic success for all students. PBIS strategies are consistently utilized and work in conjunction with emotional well-being. PBIS is a framework for developing a common vision, language and practices used consistently across the school to:
-
- improve school climate;
- strengthen relationships;
- teach and reinforce expectations;
- increase positive behaviors, academic achievement and equitable learning experiences; and
- decrease office referrals and suspensions.
Mental and behavioral health and wellness efforts are also supported across all three tiers of instruction to promote academic and social success for students. Targeted and intensive interventions are provided to support the learning needs of students. Here is a short video about PBIS and the application we are using for this system:
PBIS at Red Oak Middle School
Respect Always
Overall Obedience
Mutual Accountability
Safety & Service
Red Oak Middle School is committed to ensuring all students within our learning community can engage, excel and learn within a positive learning environment. Implementing the structures within the PBIS framework align with the ROMS core values and culture we strive to convey (see ROMS above). Our efforts to create a long-lasting legacy of scholar success, character and leadership will not only enhance Red Oak Middle School but reach into our community as well.
ROMS has established a talented and caring PBIS committee that will help to support the campus-based PBIS program initiatives. PBIS committee members consisting of teachers, specialists, instructional facilitators, school counselors, and administrators to work with the ROMS Team overall.
A key strategy of the PBIS process is being proactive. The majority of our scholars and leaders follow the school’s expectations consistently and demonstrate character and leadership each and every day. These are students we want to put more focus on! Through direct instruction, comprehension, and regular practice, all stakeholders use a consistent set of school-wide behavioral expectations (see ROMS above) to give structure to daily routines. All scholars following these expectations are acknowledged and recognized with PBIS points that will allow them to be entered into weekly drawings for prizes and privileges as well as permission to attend special Hawk Hang Out Events during the school day that will be held each six weeks.
Placing more focus on what kids do right fosters recognition of desired behaviors and helps negative behaviors to decrease.
Emotional Well-being and PBIS
PBIS strategies also incorporate emotional well-being, an integral part of education and human development and is truly the heart of Red Oak Middle School. Scholars receive counseling, reinforcements and classroom lessons focused on learning needs, skills, school expectations, and attitudes. Research supporting the significance of such competencies in promoting positive youth development is abundant. Students with higher emotional well-being competencies demonstrate higher academic success and even in their adult lives.
Our ROMS counseling vision is to provide a safe space within our school community, focusing on the heart first. ROMS is dedicated to foster and support the values, character, and integrity that lies within each and every student.
