Employee Leave Information

State Personal Leave
• Five days allocated per school year
• Available for use at the beginning of the year
• Prorated for employees who start after the first duty day of the year or leave before the end of the year
• Discretionary—taken at the individual’s discretion and scheduled in advance. These limitations apply:
• May not exceed 3 consecutive workdays or ten workdays in the school year
• Must be approved by supervisor before leave is taken
• Non-Discretionary—for personal or family illness, family emergency, death in the family, or active military service
• Medical certification required if absence is more than 3 consecutive days
• Runs concurrent with FML and TDL when applicable
• Accumulates without limit -
Local Leave
• Five days allocated per school year
• Available for use at the beginning of the year
• Prorated for employees who start after the first duty day of the year or leave before the end of the year
• Used according to the terms and conditions of state personal leave
• Shall accumulate to a maximum of 45 workdays -
Comp Time
• Use requires supervisor approval
• Only applies to nonexempt employees who work overtime
• Must be used before all other paid leave
• Accrual is limited to 60 hours
• Must be used by the end of the duty year
• Use may not unduly disrupt district operations -
Family and Medical Leave (FML)
• Contact Benefits & Leave Administrator
• Medical certification is required
• Runs concurrent with paid leave, TDL, workers’ comp, assault leave as applicable
• Qualifying events:
• Employee’s serious health condition
• A serious health condition of a child, spouse, parent
• Birth, adoption or foster placement of a child
• Qualifying exigency because of a family member’s covered active military duty
• To care for a covered servicemember with a serious injury or illness sustained in the line of duty
• Must be employed with the district for 12 months and worked at least 1,250 hours in 12 months prior to leave to be eligible

Temporary Disability Leave
• Contact Benefits & Leave Administrator
• Runs concurrent with paid leave and FML
• Medical certification is required
• May not be taken on intermittent basis
• An employee’s notice of an extended absence for own serious medical condition shall serve as a request for temporary disability leave -
Assault Leave
• Provided to an employee who is injured as the result of a physical assault suffered during the performance of his or her job
• Applies only to physical injuries
• Medical certification is required
• Coordinated with workers’ compensation
• Limited to two years from the date of injury -
Sick Leave Pool
• Contact Benefits & Leave Administrator
• Eligible employees have suffered a catastrophic, life-threatening illness or injury or is absent due to the catastrophic, life-threatening illness or injury of an immediate family member
• Eligible after all paid leave has been exhausted -

How much leave do I get each year?
You receive 5 State Personal Days and 5 Local Free days each year on July 1st. Days will be prorated for employees who begin throughout the year. (For more information please see the Leaves and Absences section of the ROISD Staff Handbook and ROISD Board Policy DEC Local)

When can I take my Leave?
The Duration of Leave as stated in the Staff Handbook and Local District Policy: Discretionary Use of State Personal Leave shall not exceed three consecutive workdays or ten total workdays in a school year.

What do I do if I need to be off for an extended period of time due to illness, surgery or birth or adoption of a baby?
As soon as possible please notify your supervisor of your situation. Then contact Maricela Torres 972-617-2941 x4173 or maricela.torres@redoakisd.org in the Benefits office to discuss Family Medical Leave (FML). You will receive a form to request FMLA and a packet to go to your doctor to complete. FML is a federal program that provides qualified employees with 12 weeks of unpaid leave to protect their job. What do I do if I am hurt at work?
Immediately notify your principal or supervisor, or go to the campus secretary or nurse. If the injury is life threatening and requires emergency medical treatment, they are to call 911, then call Maricela Torres in HR at 972-617-4173. The campus nurse will have a Worker’s Compensation packet to be completed and if the injury requires minor treatment, the employee will be sent to an appropriate medical provider. ALL accidents must be reported even if medical treatment is not sought.
The packet will be scanned to maricela.torres@redoakisd.org and originals go to the doctor with the employee. (For questions please contact Maricela Torres at x4173 ).
